What is Heresy?

�Heresy consists in a stubborn denial of truths which have been defined and proposed by the Church as divinely revealed doctrines.� (Canon 1324-1325 of the 1917 Code of Canon Law). 

What must we believe?

�By the divine and Catholic Faith, all those things must be believed which are contained in the written Word of God and in tradition, and those which are proposed by the Church, either in a solemn pronouncement or in her ordinary and universal magisterium, to be believed as divinely revealed.� (Vatican Council I, Denzinger 1792) 

Who does not believe all those things taught by the Magisterium of the Church?

�Any baptized person who � obstinately denies or doubts any of the truths proposed for belief by divine and Catholic faith, is a heretic.�(C. 1325) 

Can a heretic be a valid Pope of the Roman Catholic Church?

No. The Papal Bull Cum ex apostolatus officio of Pope Paul IV teaches that: if anyone was a heretic before the Papal election, he could not be a valid pope, even if he is elected unanimously by the Cardinals. Canon 188.4 (1917 Code of Canon Law) teachers that : if a cleric (pope, bishop, etc.) becomes a heretic, he loses his office without any declaration by operation of law. St. Robert Bellarmine, St. Antonius, St. Francis deSales, St. Alphonsus Liguori, and many other tehologians all teach that a heretic cannot be a pope: �If however, God were to permit a pope to become a notoriously and contumacious heretic he would by such fact cease to be pope, and the apostolic chair would be vacant.� -- St. Alphonsus Liguori, Church Doctor: Verita bella Fede. 1.

Ratzinger denies the Real Presence...

�Eucharistic devotion such as is noted in the silent visit by the devout in church must not be thought of as a conversation with God. This would assume that God was present there locally and in a confined way. To justify such an assertion shows a lack of understanding of the Christological mysteries of the very concept of God. This is repugnant to the serious thinking of the man who knows about the omnipresence of God. To go to church on the ground that one can visit God who is present there is a senseless act which modern man rightfully rejects.�

�If anyone says that after the consecration is complete the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ are not in the sacrament of the Eucharist and in the consecrated hosts or particles which are reserved (in the tabernacle) the true body and blood of our Lord remain not, let him be anathema.�

Ratzinger has rejected and ridiculed the core Catholic doctrine of Original Sin in public homilies he delivered in Munich, later published in book form.

The doctrine of original sin is a truth revealed by God in passages of the Old and New Testaments, but especially in the texts of Genesis 3:1-20. Sacred Tradition and the Church Magisterium teach that the sin of the first man is transmitted to all his descendants not through imitation but through propagation.

Ratzinger is an Evolutionist, which by definition makes one an athiest. To quote Ratzinger...

  • ...for science has long since disposed of the concepts (Genesis: l-49) that we have just now heard ...we hear of the Big Bang, which happened billions of years ago.
  • ...it was rather in complex ways and over vast periods of time that earth and the universe were constructed. (p.12)
  • We cannot say: creation or evolution. The proper way of putting it is: creation and evolution. (p.65)
  • ...the progress of thought in the last two decades helps us to grasp anew the inner unity of creation and evolution and of faith and reason. (p.66)

Ratzinger favors Ecumenism...

The train that took the false religious leaders from the Vatican to Assisi was described by Ratzinger as �a symbol of our pilgrimage in history� Are we not all, perhaps, passengers on the same train?... Is not the fact that the train chose as its destiny peace and justice, and the reconciliation of peoples and religions, a great inspiration and, at the same time, a splendid sign of hope?�

�Conventions, meetings and addresses are frequently arranged by these persons, at which a large number of listeners are present, and at which all without distinction are invited to join in the discussion, both infidels of every kind, and Christians, even those who have unhappily fallen away from Christ or who with obstinacy and pertinacity deny His divine nature and mission. Certainly such attempts can nowise be approved by Catholics, founded as they are on that false opinion which considers all religions to be more or less good and praiseworthy ... Not only are those who hold this opinion in error and deceived, but also in distorting the idea of true religion they reject it, and little by little, turn aside to naturalism and atheism, as it is called; from which it clearly follows that one who supports those who holds these theories and attempt to realize them, is altogether abandoning the divinely revealed religion.�

Ratzinger does not condemn laxness in Catholics...

�I have nothing against people who, though they never enter a church during the year, go to Christmas Mass, or go on the occasion of some other celebration, because this is also a way of coming close to the light. Therefore, there must be different forms of involvement and participation.�

Ratzinger rejects the notion that non-Catholics should be converted...

�The new text describes the relationship between the Church and non-Catholic Christians without speaking of �membership.� By shedding this terminological armor, the text acquired a much wider scope� The Catholic has to recognize that his own Church is not yet prepared to accept the phenomenon of multiplicity in unity; he must orient himself toward this reality� Meantime the Catholic Church has no right to absorb other Churches.�

�It is a great consolation to receive correspondence from the four corners of the world. At a slow but regular pace people are joining Our world wide parish...That joining makes them one in the Mystical Body of Christ. What ruptures the Mystical Body of Christ? It is heresy, schism and apostasy. To get back into the Church those persons repent of their break from Christ, they make their profession of faith and receive an absolution that receives them back into the Church with the right to receive the sacraments. Once that has been accomplished the convert goes to confession to receive the absolution that takes away sin.�

Ratzinger denies the Resurrection of the Body...

Ratzinger teaches that schismatic sects (e.g., the �Orthodox� sects) have the Church of Christ present in them, even though they reject the Papacy...

�Therefore, the Church of Christ is present and operative also in these Churches, even though they lack full communion with the Catholic Church since they do not accept the Catholic doctrine of the Primacy, which, according to the will of God, the Bishop of Rome objectively has and exercises over the entire Church.�

Ratzinger holds that the Jews can validly continue to await the coming of the Messiah...

In late 2001, the Pontifical Biblical Commission released a book entitled The Jewish People and the Holy Scriptures in the Christian Bible. This book argues that the Jews� wait for the Coming of the Messiah is justified and validated by the Old Testament. Ratzinger wrote the preface for the book. So, in doing so, Ratzinger denies that that Jesus Christ is Messiah.
